Biografia

After a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience, obtained at the CiMEC (Centre for Mind and Brain, University of Trento), with a thesis entitled “Plasticity following auditory deafferentation and reafferentation”, I did a post-doc at the University of Hamburg (Hamburg), focusing on plasticity in congenitally and late blind individuals.

I am now a Research Fellow at the University of Milan-Bicocca, and my main research interest concerns the role of experience in driving the functional specialisation of the brain in different cognitive domains. In particular, I am interested in the typical and atypical developmental trajectory in both basic perceptual skills (e.g., multisensory integration of visual, auditory and tactile stimuli), as well as some aspects of social cognition (e.g., emotion processing, body representation). To this aim, in my studies I have tested populations of different ages (e.g., preverbal infants, preschool children, and adults), with both typical and atypical development (e.g., visually and auditory deprived individuals, and individuals with cochlear implants), on tasks involving behavioural as well as neurophysiological measures, such as skin conductance. The deprivation approach, i.e., testing individuals with sensory loss acquired at different stages of development, allows to observe whether and how the remaining sense reorganise plastically to compensate the lost sensory modality. This reorganisation is in turn dependent upon the age of sensory loss acquisition, particularly determined by experience achieved within so-called sensitive periods. Studying typical and atypical development trajectories in different cognitive domains has important theoretical and clinical implications, as it allows understanding potential populations at risk and reflect on possible interventions.
